Conditions for acceptance of international patients at Proton Beam Therapy Center of University of Tsukuba Hospital
We can accept patients who are in good general condition, are able to travel to Japan easily, and have an
expected prognosis of at least one year. The diseases and conditions for which we can provide care are
listed below. However, we will make a decision as to whether or not we can actually perform proton therapy on a case-by-case basis.
In cases where a hospital stay is required, we will provide medical care to patients who comply with our rules and regulations for the hospital stay.
Liver cancer and intrahepatic cholangio carcinoma
・One to three lesions
・Good liver function (Child A)
・Absence of jaundice and ascites
・There are no tumors other than those in the liver.
Prostate cancer
・Cases where the cancer has not spread to the lymph nodes or to other organs.
・Cases of prostate cancer are clssified as either low-risk, medium-risk, or high-risk according to the condition if the tumor. For cases classified as low-risk, only proton therapy is administered, and in medium- and high-risk cases proton therapy is combined with hormone therapy.
Lung cancer
・Stage I (proton therapy only)
・Cases where the patient has good respiratory function and does not have interstitial pneumonia as a complication.
Esophageal cancer
・Stage I (proton therapy in combination with chemotherapy)
・The cancer has not spread to other organs or bones.
Pancreatic cancer
・The cancer has not spread to other organs and there is no seeding.
Head and neck cancer
・Cancer of the nasal cavity and cancer of the paranasal sinus (such as maxillary cancer, ethmoid sinus cancer, etc.) (including malignant melanoma)
・Olfactory neuroblastoma
・The cancer has not spread to other organs.
Brain tumors
・Cases where the patient is in good general condition, regardless of the disease, and there is no impairment of consciousness.
・Proton therapy may be used to treat primary brain tumors, such as malignant glioma, and meningioma and schwannoma which are difficult to remove by surgery.
・Proton therapy is not used to treat metastatic brain tumors because it is possible to use other radiation therapies.
Skull base tumor
・Proton therapy is used in cases in which surgery cannot be used or in which tumors cannot be fully removed by surgery.
Childhood cancer
・Proton therapy is used to treat childhood solid tumors which need radiation therapy.We may propose other radiation therapies according to the medical condition of the patient.
・It is important that therapy is provided at the right timing, so please seek consultation as soon as possible.
