Conditions for acceptance of international patients at Proton Beam Therapy Center of University of Tsukuba Hospital
We can accept patients who are in good general condition, are able to travel to Japan easily, and have an
expected prognosis of at least one year. The diseases and conditions for which we can provide care are
listed below. However, we will make a decision as to whether or not we can actually perform proton therapy on a case-by-case basis.
In cases where a hospital stay is required, we will provide medical care to patients who comply with our rules and regulations for the hospital stay.
Brain tumors (including benign tumors)
・Cases where the patient is in good general condition, regardless of the disease, and there is no impairment of consciousness.
Head and neck cancer
・Cancer of the nasal cavity and cancer of the paranasal sinus (such as maxillary cancer, ethmoid sinus cancer, etc.) (including malignant melanoma)
・Skull base tumor (chordoma and chondrosarcoma)
・Stage I (proton therapy only) or stage II or III (proton therapy in combination with chemotherapy)
・Cases where the patient has good respiratory function and does not have interstitial pneumonia as a complication.
・Cases where there is no extensive invasion to organs at risk (the heart, blood vessels, bronchi, etc.), such as thymoma or thymus cancer.
・Stage I (proton therapy in combination with chemotherapy)
Liver cancer and intrahepatic cholangiocarcinoma
・One to three lesions
・Good liver function (Child A)
・Absence of jaundice and ascites
・Cases where the cancer has not spread to the lymph nodes or to other organs.
・Malignant lymphoma that requires radiation therapy (including young adults and patients with Hodgkin's disease in particular)
Cancers in children and young adults (in their 30s or younger)
・Applicable for all diseases (only cases in stable condition are accepted)
・Liver metastasis (one to three tumors)
・Lung metastasis (one or two tumors)
・Lymph node metastasis (cases involving only one area, such as the chest, abdomen, or pelvis)
・Cases that require radiation therapy, such as cerebral arteriovenous malformation, angioma, desmoid, and so on.
